Whitby’s Team Up with SAS to Clean up the Beaches!

Beach Clean TeamOn Saturday 6th May a team of 15 volunteers from Whitby & Co descended on a Cumbrian Beach to rid it of its litter! This was one of 400+ ‘Big Spring Beach Cleans’ organised in association with Surfers Against Sewage.Beach Clean Beach Bottle

Despite concentrating on a short 300 metre stretch of beach, the team picked up almost 12kg of litter. Items included beer cans, discarded beach toys, cotton buds, tampon applicators, disposable BBQs, wire and even a large battery! And, as is usually the case, the biggest offenders were single use plastic bottles. None of these items should be found discarded on the beach or in the sea – Beach Clean Rubbishsmall items such as cotton buds, can tabs and bottle tops can be ingested by marine life and just imagine the pain that is caused by being tangled up in wire!

Surfers Against Sewage recently reported “Recent surveys have shown that there are almost 160 plastic bottles for every mile of UK shoreline and that plastic pollution is affecting almost every part of our oceans”. Surfers Against Sewage are constantly working to encourage communities to ‘refuse and refill’.
